• Baghdatis crashes out in straight sets at Zagreb

first_imgMarcos Baghdatis missed out on a place in the final of the Zagreb Indoors tournament after losing out to 31-year-old Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 6-4.The Cypriot has won four tournaments in his career, and the Zagreb Indoors tournament was one of them back in 2007 when he defeated Ivan Ljubičić on home soil in the final 7–6, 4–6, 6–4.In the opening round, Baghdatis sent out a clear message by knocking out local boy and top seed Ivo Karlovic. In that game, Baghdatis got off to a bad start, losing the first set before winning the next two and the same pattern followed in the next round. After another sluggish start in which he lost first set by 6-3 against sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny, he rallied back with some aggressive baseline play to win the next two decisive sets by 6-4 and 6-3.Baghdatis, currently world no.77, went into this tournament on the back of three excellent displays in the Australian Open. He was forced to dig deep to progress to the second round against Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili in what was a seesaw encounter which he eventually won over five sets.Few fancied his chances in the second round against 20th seed David Goffin but the Cypriot again showed his steel by knocking out the much-fancied Belgian, in a four-set encounter. After reaching the third round of his favorite Grand Slam, he came close to pulling off another upset but eventually bowed out after an enthralling five-set match against world no.11 Grigor Dimitrov.last_img
